Proposed hit to undocumented students in Alabama

We've had a few recent discussions around undocumented student status, and I thought some of y'all would be interested in this article, which is about this piece of legislation in Alabama--dubiously named the "Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act"--that includes a prohibition on K-12 students' "participation in any extracurricular activity outside of the basic course of study." And of course, it's all in the name of jobs. It sounds like it's made it through a couple rounds of how-a-bill-becomes-a-law, though there will certainly be legal challenges if it passes.

  1. It sounds like it will not only be a burden but a bigger hassle to go through if it passes. It makes you carry around additional information to prove you're a citizen. And getting arrested for giving a ride to a "undocumented resident" from your school to their nearby home sounds ridiculous.

  2. the best part of the article? where they mention a legislator copying portions of his bill from wikipedia. maybe they'll use twitter to debate and then vote on the bill while they're at it.

seriously though, this is a thinly veiled anti-immigrant bill. they talk repeatedly about finding ways to do things legally. basically looking for an end to their means by exploiting loopholes and stretching the definition of the law. sigh...that's the government at work for you.
